(Tashiro) April 27/56 NEWS
OPERATION DIKE – These Hutterites pass sandbags along to the front of the line where they are placed to repair a broken dike three miles east of Poplar Point, on the south side of the Assiniboine river. About 75 Hutterites joined with other framers in the area, plus 12 CD volunteers from Portage, in an effort to repair the 70-foot break. Today they are reinforcing the bottom of the dike, where the water was still seeping through.

MOTORBOAT TRANSPORTATION – Ed. Chesney of Petersfield (second from left) transports sandbags by motorboat three quarters of a mile to help fill the gap in the dike east of Poplar Point. Mr. Chesney’s coat was covered with ice. Mayor H. L. Henderson (in fedora) is shown looking on.
REINFORCEMENT FOR DIKE – Hutterites and farmers from the Poplar Point area joined forces to build a dike to bridge a 70-foot gap torn by the breakup of the Assiniboine river. They are working against the clock in an effort to get the break repaired before arrival of the crest. Included in the above photo are Councillor Leo LaCroix of Cartier municipality (second from left) and standing beside him, Jake Waldner, head of the Poplar Point Hutterite colony. The photo above shows the piling used to hold the sandbags in place.
