Elizabeth Francis is first winner Iona Weesnusk [Weenusk] Memorial for creative writing

First winner

Manitoba Regional Director of Indian Affairs, Bill Thomas, was in Portage la Prairie Tuesday afternoon to present a cheque for $50 to Elizabeth Francis, first prize winner of the first annual Iona Weenusk creative writing competition, initiated as a memorial to Iona Weenusk who was killed in an air accident one year ago. Elizabeth is a grade 9 student at Prince Charles school. Nora Omand, also a grade nine student at Prince Charles school was the fifth place winner in the province. The contest is open to any Indian student in Manitoba. Also on hand Tuesday to extend congratulations were Chief Mrs. Marlene Peters of Long Plain (in back) principal D. I. Gair, English teacher D. Whyte, local Indian Affairs representative, Steve Malkovitch and scholarship committee representative Miss Betty Ann Caldwell.
