56 Rinks Entered In Portage Ladies Bonspiel

Boy, was that close! Mrs. Gwen Delf of Rathwell wipes a fevered brow after turning back a courageous comeback by the Macdonald rink of Pine Falls. Mrs. Delf had a seven-up lead early but had to make a good shot on the last end to triumph. Mrs. Edith Vandell, third on the Delf rink, seems to be taking victory in stride.

Dale Macdonald. a top-notch curler himself, is relegated to the sidelines with a vengeance. Dale, here, babysits with his two young daughters while Mrs. Macdonald does battle in the Portage ladies bonspiel. The betting is that Dale, by Thursday night, will be happy to see the last of this year's edition of the 'spiel.

Dignitaries taking part in the opening ceremonies of the Portage ladies curling club bonspiel, held between draws Monday afternoon, were, left to right, Mrs. Ann Hutchinson, president of the ladies curling club; Mrs. H. L. Henderson, wife of Mayor Henderson, and Max Wilton, president of the Portage curling club.

Mrs. Jean Farncombe of High Bluff doesn't seem to mind attending to the distasteful side of the Portage ladies' bonspiel - that's payment of fees, naturally. Here she is shown registering her rink and paying her fees to Mrs. Helen Wishart as the big 'spiel got under way Monday morning.
