Mayor Henderson Monday night said he was satisfied with this year’s budget. FIRE PROTECTION is no luxury in any council budget. This year, portage will expend $28,200 to help maintain its fire department and fire-fighting equipment. The budget this year is higher than normal, because of the $3,500 first year payment to be spent for a new fire truck. Committee chairman A. R. Barrett is in inset. REGISTRATION at Portage la Prairie schools has risen from 1,416 in 1950 to its present 1,703 students. A costly item in any municipality’s budget, Portagers will expend $145,000 this year to help ensure their children a proper education. ADMINISTRATION of the city’s business is carried on in Portage’s city hall. Ald. N. K. Weber, inset, is chairman of the finance and property committee which is in charge of administration. Cost of this civic service this year will be $55,915. THE HEALTH AND WELFARE COMMITTEE of city council probably gets less publicity than any other committee of council, because of the delicate nature of its work. However, the committee this year will spend $38,000 to help people in need and on health matters. Committee chairman is Al. T. N. Metheral, inset. HELPING SCHOOL CHILDREN get safely across busy intersections is only one of the many jobs performed by the RCMP, Portage’s police force The cost of police protection this year will be $28,140. Ald. Mrs. J. B. Wishart, inset, is chairman of the police and bylaws committee. WORK DONE by the Boards of Works department in Portage la Prairie consists of many and varied items, but some of the most important during the winter time is snow removal. To help maintain this service, council has allotted this committee $53,886 this year. Ald. Dr. F. W. Parrott, inset, a member of council since January 1st, is committee chairman. SUPPLY OF WATER is a vital necessity in any progressive community, and during the past few years Portage has expanded its waterworks plant to help fill the growing need brought about by an increase in population and the re-opening of the two nearby airports. One of the newer sections of the plant is shown above. The waterworks committee this year will spend $63,308 to bring water into your home. Committee chairman is Ald. C. B. Astbury, shown in inset.
