Tashiro July 3,4,5,6/65 News 93rd FAIR ACTIVITIES 4-H’ERS TAKE OPENING DAY SPOTLIGHT CATTLE AND RACES – SECOND DAY
IT WAS AN EARLY MORNING for directors of the Portage Fair Board Monday. President J. T. Trimble has revived directors’ breakfast on the grounds and it ‘caught on’ with members this morning. This was the group that turned for the first breakfast – two more to go.
THE ISLAND PARK TR(INFORMATION MISSING) was described today as being “like a springboard” by horsemen who had their harness (information missing)ges out for workouts. The three-day card opened this afternoon and is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday. More than 120 harness horses are stable in the fair grounds.
AMONG THE BUSIEST PEOPLE on the Portage Fair grounds this morning were the lady directors and exhibitors in the domestic manufacture classes. Displays were being set up this morning prior to the start of judging at the noon hours.
4-H QUEEN AT PORTAGE FAIR this summer is Carol Vane, second from the left, crowned during ceremonies Monday evening by Fair Board president J. T. Trimble. At left is Princess Lynn Clements of Inglow, Man., and at right is Princess Bonnie Howard of Neepawa.
BIRDIES GAL, owned by Nealy Oliver of Beechy, Sask., Monday received the Christianson Ltd. Cooler blanket as winner in the featured fifth race. Con Christianson presented the blanket. Mr. Oliver drove his own horse to the win. Mrs. Oliver looks on.

THERE WAS PLENTY OF EXCITEMENT during Monday’s opening harness card. Above is the driving finish in the fifth race, taken by Birdies Gal, seen here second from the outside sweeping in to claim first prize money. The pacer came in with a flat time of 2.13 for owner-driver Nealy Oliver of Beechy, Sask.
THERE WERE SOME SKITTISH HEREFORDS in the show ring at Portage Fair Monday, and these three youngsters can testify. Robert J. Kerr of Bagot, swept the major awards in the Hereford classes, taking both grand champion awards.
CLASSIC ROADSTERS AND HACKNEYS are attracting large crowds to the light of the horse show, one of the features of Portage’s 93rd annual exhibition. Classes like this are proving interesting to both spectators and judge Carl Roberts.
UP AND OVER – It’s Mona Lisa, owned and ridden by Lorna Gray of Winnipeg, one of the major winners in the light horse classes at the Portage Fair Tuesday evening. Competition in all classes at Portage this year is excellent, giving judge Carl Roberts of Winnipeg, a handful of decisions to make.
A COOLER BLANKET from the Anglo Coffee Shop went to Jean Mohawk Friday. Donors were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Gunnlaugson, at left. With Jean Mohawk are owner driver Chuckie Lewis and Mrs. Lewis of Welwyn, Sask.
A CLOSE FINISH marked the third race of the day at Portage Tuesday. Here Chuckie Lewis of Welwyn, Sask., drives Jean Mohawk, at extreme right, in the dash for the wire. Close finishes were a highlight of the entire Tuesday card.
