PORTAGE HOSTS RURAL-PROV. BANTAM HOCKEY PLAYOFFS
Getting it all underway| Ald. W. A. Linden dropped the first puck at 5:50 p.m. Friday and at about n10:45 p.m. Sunday the final whistle sounder for the conclusion of three days of highly entertaining minor hockey. The two centremen are Billy Garrioch of Portage and Adam Baron of Dauphin. Referees are Garry Genaille and Allan White while PMHA president Jim Ward is in the centre. Brandon teams won both the Bantam and Minor Bantam MAHA South Division playoffs although Portage Minor Bantams also qualified for the provincial championships.
Top Bantam players| An awards committee of 14 persons elected the top individual players during the weekend in all 12 games in both the Bantam and Minor Bantam hockey division. Terry Kimacovich, Dauphin goalie is on the left and Rick Slawson, of Brandon, selected the top sportsman is on the right. Centre is Jack Mitchell, treasurer of the Portage Minor Hockey Association who also doubled as one the goal judges during the weekend. Other Bantam winners were Gord Mckay of Brandon as top denfeseman and Ralph Krueger of Steinbach, top forward.
Minor Bantam top players| Top players at the South Division Minor Bantam hockey playoff during the weekend at Portage included, from the left, Brain Brezden of Dauphin, best sportsman; Terry Ross of Brandon best defenseman; Sheldon Birss of Dauphin best goaltender; and Bill Garrioch of Portage, the top forward. From the left at the rear are Ed Bachalo, first vice-president of the Portage Minor Hockey Association and manager of the Portage Bantams, and Jim Ward, president of the PMHA and timekeeper for many of the games.
